Description
The Temptation of Christ on the Mountain is a panel by Duccio from the rear predella of the Maestà, the great altarpiece made for Siena Cathedral. Christ dismisses the devil, who has offered him the kingdoms of the world, here represented as miniature walled cities. The difference in scale conveys the spiritual authority of Christ over worldly wealth and political power.
Painted between 1308 and 1311, the work is now in the Frick Collection, New York. Technical research has shown that the two angels on the right were added after the initial painting, probably by an assistant in Duccio's workshop. The original setting is equally important. As part of a predella, this image belonged to a sequence of small scenes inviting comparison as the eye moved from one episode of Christ’s ministry to another.
