Description
The Rest on the Flight into Egypt, painted around 1597, is a fundamental work from Caravaggio's early Roman period and his first known religious painting on a substantial scale. It depicts a traditional episode from Christ's infancy: the Holy Family resting during their flight into Egypt to escape Herod's persecution.
The composition is organized in a remarkably original manner. An angel seen from behind, with large dark wings, occupies the centre of the painting and visually divides the scene. The angel plays a violin while Saint Joseph, standing to the left, holds the musical score. On the right, Mary sleeps with her head gently inclined toward the Christ Child, whom she holds protectively in her arms. The central angel links the figures through music, making an otherwise quiet pause feel full of passing time. The landscape contributes to the family's sense of temporary shelter.
