Description
The Presentation of the Christ Child in the Temple at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum belongs to the small group of panels illustrating the life of Christ that also includes the Metropolitan Museum's Adoration of the Magi. Giotto compresses the narrative into a small but rigorously ordered space: the Virgin and Saint Joseph stand at the left, Simeon and the prophetess Anna at the right, while a ciborium over an altar marks the Temple of Jerusalem between them.
The geometric center of the composition is almost empty. Beneath the ciborium stands the altar, over which Simeon holds the Child. This arrangement allows Jesus's gesture to stand out with exceptional clarity: the infant turns toward Mary and reaches out to return to her.
