Description
In the final scene of the Saint Martin cycle in Assisi, Simone Martini depicts the saint’s funeral. His body, dressed in episcopal vestments, lies on a bier covered with patterned blue cloth. Clerics and religious figures gather around, praying, singing and taking part in the burial liturgy.
The ceremony unfolds beneath the vaults of an elegant Gothic chapel. Rich textiles, varied faces and restrained gestures give this scene its solemn atmosphere and turn an individual death into an expression of shared memory.
The fresco concludes a story that began with one soldier’s individual act of charity. In contrast with the intimate death scene, the funeral gathers an entire community around the bishop’s memory. Simone controls this large group through varied faces, restrained gestures and solemn architecture, ensuring that rich ceremonial details never entirely displace the human experience of farewell and shared mourning.
