Description
Caravaggio concentrates the Gospel episode of Saint Peter's denials within an exceptionally restricted group. A maid accuses the apostle by pointing towards him while a soldier, seen largely from behind, participates in the confrontation. Peter responds by bringing both hands towards his chest, a gesture simultaneously suggesting surprise, fear and denial.
The scene takes place at night around a barely visible fire, and almost every secondary architectural or narrative element has been eliminated. Painted during the final months of Caravaggio's life, the work carries the expressive economy of his late style to an extreme. The figures emerge fragmentarily from profound darkness, while light concentrates upon faces and hands, turning gesture into the principal narrative language. The exchange of hands and glances makes his moral vulnerability immediately visible without illustrating all three denials separately.
