Description
Simone Martini portrays the death of Saint Martin of Tours in the presence of clergy and followers. The saint’s body, dressed in episcopal vestments, occupies the foreground, while the bystanders express grief, prayer and contemplation through different gestures.
Above the gathering, angels escort his soul towards heaven. The fresco belongs to the Chapel of Saint Martin in the Lower Basilica of San Francesco at Assisi and forms a narrative pair with the following scene of his funeral.
The picture brings together two dimensions: the grief of those standing beside the body and the heavenly welcome represented by angels. It does not claim to document precisely who attended Martin’s death. Through bowed heads, joined hands and a carefully ordered composition, Simone turns the bishop’s final moments into a reflection on memory, loss and Christian hope.
