Description
The Crucifixion of Saint Peter, painted around 1600–1601 for the Cerasi Chapel in Santa Maria del Popolo in Rome, depicts three men raising the cross on which the apostle Peter is being crucified upside down.
Caravaggio radically simplifies the narrative. There are no spectators, monumental architectural elements or visible supernatural manifestations. The scene focuses exclusively on Peter, his three executioners and the heavy wooden cross they struggle to raise.
The physical effort of the men is central to the composition. Their bodies bend, push and pull in different directions, transforming the martyrdom into an immediate and tangible event. The executioners are neither idealised nor demonised. They struggle with the actual weight of the cross while the aged apostle approaches the end of his life.
