Description
The Crowning with Thorns , painted around 1602–1604 , depicts an episode from the Passion of Christ. Jesus remains seated while two executioners use sticks to press the crown of thorns onto his head. Caravaggio reduces the scene to a small number of monumental figures and concentrates its tension on the physical actions of Christ's tormentors.
Their bodies lean towards Jesus while he remains bent forward and apparently resigned to his suffering. Strong illumination falls on Christ's body while much of the surrounding space remains in darkness, creating an austere and intensely immediate representation of the Passion. The scene discards most narrative setting to concentrate on Christ's suffering. The episode belongs to the mockery following Christ's condemnation: the crown is intended to ridicule his claim to kingship.
