Description
Caravaggio depicts the final moment in the execution of Saint John the Baptist within a prison courtyard. The saint lies on the ground while the executioner bends over him to complete the beheading. Salome waits with a large platter intended to receive the head, while an elderly woman reacts in horror with her hands raised to her face. At a distance, two prisoners watch the event through a barred window. The action occupies only part of the enormous canvas, leaving extensive architectural areas almost empty and intensifying the sense of isolation.
The painting marks a decisive transformation in Caravaggio's late pictorial language. Unlike the densely grouped figures characteristic of many Roman compositions, the protagonists here appear small in relation to the surrounding space. Illumination is more restrained and the palette increasingly austere, while the violent episode unfolds with remarkably little theatricality.
