Description
The Stigmatisation of Saint Francis in the Bardi Chapel occupies a distinctive position above the entrance arch and is visible from the transept. The saint kneels in a rocky landscape while receiving the stigmata from a celestial apparition in the form of the crucified seraphic Christ. Giotto concentrates the action on the direct relationship between Francis and the supernatural figure. Rays extend from Christ's wounds to the saint's hands, feet and side, making the miracle immediately legible. Francis appears startled yet receptive, turning toward the apparition.
His posture and gaze convey astonishment, fear and acceptance, demonstrating Giotto's increasing interest in psychological expression. The rocky landscape and small building at the right establish a tangible setting while remaining subordinate to the central event.
