Description
The entrance to the Chapel of Saint Martin in the Lower Basilica of Saint Francis at Assisi combines a dedication scene with eight standing saints arranged in pairs around the arch. Together, these paintings introduce the religious programme unfolding inside the chapel.
In the dedication fresco, Saint Martin receives the kneeling Franciscan cardinal Gentile Partino da Montefiore, who funded the chapel and whose donation is documented in 1312. The master photograph shows this episode alone rather than the entire entrance decoration.
The entrance to a medieval chapel performed a narrative task: it marked a threshold and prepared visitors to interpret the images beyond it. Here the painted programme begins before anyone enters. The donor scene explains whose devotion helped shape the setting, while the saints around the arch situate Martin within a wider community of exemplary figures.
