Description
This scene opens the fresco cycle of the Chapel of Saint Martin in the Lower Basilica at Assisi. The young saint, still serving as a Roman soldier, halts on horseback before a half-clothed beggar and cuts his cloak to share it.
Simone Martini turns the charitable act into a clear and solemn image. The pink city wall, the white horse and the broad blue sky create a simple setting charged with narrative force.
The story presents charity as a personal decision: the soldier gives away part of a garment he still needs. Placed at the beginning of the cycle, the painting prepares the subsequent dream in which Christ reveals the spiritual meaning of this act. Its clear outlines and restrained gestures make an important Christian ideal understandable through an ordinary human encounter.
