Description
Saint Martin, now bishop of Tours, sits in deep contemplation while two attendants try to attract his attention. One gently touches his shoulder; the other waits with a liturgical book. Martin is expected to celebrate Mass, yet appears unaware of the activity around him.
Simone Martini places the episode beneath Gothic arches in a strikingly bare interior. The bishop’s stillness contrasts with the attendants’ restrained gestures. The fresco belongs to the Saint Martin cycle in the Lower Basilica of San Francesco, Assisi.
The book held by an assistant recalls the approaching church service, although the bishop remains lost in prayer. This tension between personal contemplation and responsibility towards others gives depth to an apparently static scene. Ordered architecture and restrained gestures make an inward experience visible without the extraordinary events found in neighbouring paintings from the same narrative cycle.
