Description
Saint Lucy stands against a gold background, holding a martyr’s palm in her right hand and a small lamp containing two eyes in her left. She wears a dark dress beneath a broad crimson mantle edged with gold. A white veil frames her face, reinforcing the figure’s quiet dignity, while an inscription in the halo identifies the saint. Her steady, frontal presence makes the panel an image for sustained contemplation and prayer rather than an illustration of a dramatic episode.
The tempera painting on wood remains in the church of Santa Lucia dei Magnoli in Florence. Italy’s official heritage catalogue dates it approximately between 1332 and 1340 and lists Pietro Lorenzetti as its attributed author; other scholars have suggested different dates. A historical record concerning 1473 documents its placement on an altar and work carried out by Jacopo del Sellaio. Its survival in the church preserves a meaningful connection with its devotional setting.
