Description
Saint John the Baptist appears alone, seated and leaning forward in a silent and introspective attitude. A fur garment partially covers his body, while the intense red cloak provides the principal chromatic accent of the composition and the simple reed cross identifies the figure.
Caravaggio dispenses with narrative episodes and reduces the saint's traditional attributes to a minimum, concentrating instead on his physical and psychological presence. The surrounding darkness reinforces the atmosphere of isolation and meditation.
The hunched posture, lowered head and downcast gaze present John not as a heroic or triumphant figure but as a young man withdrawn into the wilderness and absorbed in contemplation. Light selectively touches his body, face, arms and the folds of the red drapery, while extensive areas remain submerged in shadow.
