Description
Saint John the Baptist is represented as a young man isolated in a rugged landscape, accompanied by the attributes that identify him as the precursor of Christ: the lamb and the simple reed cross. Caravaggio avoids an explicit narrative and presents the saint during a moment of withdrawal and contemplation, placing particular emphasis on his physical presence and the surrounding natural environment.
The youthful body, modelled by directed light, contrasts with the darker areas of the landscape and with the intense colour of the drapery. The painting displays features associated with Caravaggio's working methods, including the direct construction of the figures, pronounced contrasts of light and darkness, and alterations introduced during the process of execution.
Restoration and technical studies completed in 2022 provided further information about these procedures and strengthened the arguments supporting an attribution to Caravaggio.
