Description
Saint John on Patmos occupies the upper register of the Evangelist cycle in the Peruzzi Chapel. The scene shows the saint during his exile on the island of Patmos, absorbed in the apocalyptic visions that would form the Book of Revelation. Giotto organizes the episode with remarkable economy, integrating landscape, sea and heavenly apparitions into a unified narrative image. Saint John sits on the island in a posture of concentration and inward reflection.
His body remains stable and restrained, while the inclination of his head and the position of his hands convey the intensity of his inner experience. Unlike other scenes in the cycle, the narrative depends not on interaction among several figures but on the relationship between the saint and his visions.
