Description
Pietro Lorenzetti depicts Saint Francis kneeling among rocks during the experience of the stigmata, traditionally placed on Mount La Verna. Before him appears a winged, human-like seraph associated with the crucified Christ. Fine rays link the vision to the saint’s body as he raises his hands in astonishment. On the right, a friar seated near a church holds an open book; he is generally identified as Brother Leo, one of Francis’s closest companions.
Pinkish cliffs, trees, a small hermitage and a church create a mountainous setting against a dark background. The painting belongs to the fresco decoration of the left transept of the Lower Basilica of Saint Francis in Assisi. Rather than offering a literal landscape record, Lorenzetti transforms a spiritual narrative into a vivid encounter between isolation, supernatural revelation and the quieter daily life of the Franciscan community.
