Description
Saint Catherine of Alexandria is depicted as a young royal martyr, crowned and set against a gold ground. Simone Martini focuses the image on the inclined face, the soft modelling and the elegance of the hands, reducing the attributes to the essentials. The panel conveys nobility and delicacy, turning the saint into a calm and intimate presence intended for devotional contemplation rather than dramatic narrative.
The panel once belonged to the San Francesco polyptych in Orvieto and is now preserved in the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa. Dated around 1320–1325, it measures 82.2 × 44.5 cm and offers an excellent summary of the refined linear language of Sienese painting. Its significance lies not only in the beauty of the isolated figure, but also in its relation to a now dismembered altarpiece in which Saint Catherine originally formed part of a wider sacred community.
