Description
The Madonna of the Franciscans is a small devotional panel painted by Duccio around 1285 and now kept at the Pinacoteca Nazionale in Siena. Mary sits with the Christ Child and draws her mantle over three kneeling Franciscan friars. Within this intimate format, the artist creates a remarkably expressive encounter between heavenly protection and human humility.
The patterned green hanging and the gently flowing contours show Duccio’s interest in Gothic refinement. The protective gesture also points towards the developing imagery of the Virgin of Mercy. It is especially revealing to compare this panel with Marian images that emphasised an inaccessible heavenly queen. Duccio retains the throne and the traditional sacred hierarchy while adding an unmistakable act of welcome. Even without knowing Franciscan history, viewers can understand what protection means in this scene.
