Description
This small panel shows the Virgin holding the Christ Child against a gold ground. The delicacy of the faces, the flowing contours and the refined colour harmonies place it among the most elegant works associated with Simone Martini. It is preserved in the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum in Cologne and is linked to the polyptych of Sant’Agostino in San Gimignano.
The panel was probably conceived in relation to other sacred figures, rather than as a self-contained scene set against an empty background. Its proposed central position in a polyptych would explain why the Madonna and Child command the viewer's attention. Saints in neighbouring compartments could have expanded the devotional relationships available around the altar. Such a reconstruction is persuasive, but the absence of complete documentation means its hypothetical character must remain clear. Intimacy results from very restrained movements.
