Description
The Institution of the Crib at Greccio depicts the Christmas celebration organized by Saint Francis at Greccio in 1223, one of the best-known episodes in Franciscan tradition. According to the hagiographical sources, Francis wished to contemplate in tangible form the humble circumstances of Christ's birth and prepared a manger with hay and living animals. During the liturgical celebration, tradition relates that a child miraculously appeared in the crib and was embraced by the saint.
The episode subsequently became one of the legendary foundations of the Western Nativity-scene tradition. The fresco does not place the event in a cave or rural landscape but within a complex ecclesiastical interior. This choice is crucial to both composition and meaning. Francis kneels and bends toward the Child, creating the emotional focus of the episode, while friars and laypeople gather around as a community witnessing and participating in the event.
