Description
God the Father with Angels is the original central pinnacle of the Baroncelli Polyptych and is essential for reconstructing the medieval appearance of the altarpiece. It is now preserved at The San Diego Museum of Art, separated from the main ensemble that remains in the Baroncelli Chapel of Santa Croce. The composition has a triangular format adapted to the Gothic crowning of the original altarpiece. God the Father appears frontally at the center, surrounded by a golden radiance that transforms the panel into a supernatural vision.
God holds an open book displaying alpha and omega, symbols of beginning and end. A sword and a branch associated with the tree of life further connect the image with the visionary language of Revelation.
