Description
The Flight into Egypt in the Scrovegni Chapel depicts the journey of the Holy Family after Herod's order to kill the children of Bethlehem. Giotto turns the episode into a slow procession moving through a rocky landscape. Mary occupies the center, seated on a donkey and holding the Child, while Saint Joseph walks ahead and several companions complete the group. Above them, an angel guides the travelers from the sky.
The Virgin dominates the scene through her stability. While almost every other figure appears to walk, converse or look around, Mary remains upright and still on the animal. The large rock behind her echoes and reinforces the verticality of her body, making her the visual axis of the composition. The Child, protected in his mother's arms, adds intimacy to the broader movement of the procession.
