Description
The Entry into Jerusalem in the Scrovegni Chapel depicts Christ entering the city to the acclaim of the crowd, an episode that opens the final phase of his public life and leads directly toward the Passion. Jesus approaches from the left on a donkey, followed by the apostles, while a group of citizens comes out from the right to receive him.
The scene is constructed as an encounter between two groups converging around Christ. Giotto organizes the composition through a clear balance of movement and stability. The apostolic procession advances behind Jesus in a compact mass, while the crowd of Jerusalem gathers before him. Christ occupies the connecting position between the groups and remains calm, raising his hand in blessing.
