Description
The Dream of Innocent III occupies a central place within the Stories of Saint Francis in the Upper Basilica of San Francesco at Assisi. The fresco depicts the nocturnal vision in which Pope Innocent III sees a poor friar supporting with his own body the Basilica of Saint John Lateran, the symbolic seat of the Western Church, as it appears to lean and threaten collapse.
The friar is Saint Francis, not yet fully recognized by the pontiff. The dream functions as a providential sign: the new Franciscan fraternity, rather than endangering the Church, is destined to support and renew it. The composition turns a symbolic vision into a remarkably concrete spatial event. Such narrative clarity, based on posture, direction and spatial relationships, became one of the elements that made this cycle crucial for fourteenth-century Italian painting.
