Description
In the left transept of the Lower Basilica of Saint Francis at Assisi, Pietro Lorenzetti created an extensive painted narrative of Christ’s Passion. Its episodes occupy different architectural surfaces and connect events preceding Jesus’ death with those that follow. The Entry into Jerusalem, Last Supper, Washing of the Feet, Arrest, Flagellation and Road to Calvary lead towards the Crucifixion, Deposition, Entombment, Descent into Limbo and Resurrection.
The painter transforms walls and vaults into a visual journey shaped by gestures, glances and shared emotions. People move among imagined buildings and landscapes within the actual church. His style combines Sienese colour with the physical presence and spatial experiments associated with Giotto. Scholars continue to debate the dates and sequence of the fresco campaigns. This entry covers the ensemble, while the monumental Crucifixion also receives its own individual entry in the catalogue.
