Description
The Confirmation of the Rule represents one of the decisive moments in the early history of the Franciscan Order: the meeting of Saint Francis and his first companions with Pope Innocent III in order to obtain recognition of their way of life. The fresco translates into visual form the process by which a fraternity founded on evangelical poverty entered the institutional framework of the Church.
The pope occupies a central and elevated position, accompanied by members of the curia, while Francis and the friars appear before him in a respectful attitude. Ecclesiastical hierarchy and Franciscan humility are clearly distinguished yet brought together within the same visual structure. The composition is organized through carefully balanced groups. The pope is not merely a symbol of authority but a seated body occupying weight and space; the clerics assume differentiated positions; Francis and his companions appear as individuals within a community.
