Description
The Alte Pinakothek's Christ on the Cross belonged to a seven-scene narrative dossal illustrating the life of Christ. Christ occupies the central axis against a gold ground, while the mourners gather below: the Virgin, Saint John, holy women, Saint Francis and kneeling figures close to the cross. The cross provides a clear vertical and horizontal structure. Christ's elongated body is rendered with simplified but convincing physical weight, his head bowed and arms stretched under tension.
Giotto emphasizes the reality of death while preserving the solemnity of devotional imagery. At the left, the Virgin collapses and is supported by the women around her. Overlapping bodies and restrained gestures convey grief through physical action rather than decorative convention. Saint Francis kneels at the foot of the cross, intensifying the Franciscan emphasis on affective participation in Christ's Passion.
