Description
This panel by Simone Martini shows the moment when Mary and Joseph are reunited with Jesus after losing him during their visit to the Temple in Jerusalem. Mary sits with an open book in her hand, while Joseph leans toward both her and the boy, mediating between them with an explanatory gesture. Jesus stands quietly, listening with calm self-possession. The scene does not depict Christ debating with the doctors, but the intimate family moment immediately after the rediscovery.
Painted in 1342 during the artist’s final period, the work is now in Liverpool’s Walker Art Gallery. It is executed in tempera and gold leaf on wood and measures 49.6 by 35.1 centimeters. The gold ground, the refined folds, and the eloquent hands turn a Gospel episode into an image of delicate emotional intensity. An inscription along the frame recorded that Simone Martini signed and dated the panel in that same year.
